National Maritime Day: A Brief History

National Maritime Day is observed every year on April 5 to celebrate India’s maritime heritage and highlight the sector’s role in trade, economy, and security. The date marks the historic 1919 voyage of India’s first flagged ship, SS Loyalty, from Bombay to London. The day was officially declared in 1964 after India’s fleet reached 1 million gross registered tonnage. Ports like Dhamra also mark the occasion with Maritime Week, honouring seafarers and industry stakeholders.
