Balasore, swa news : TP Northern Odisha Distribution Limited (TPNODL), a joint venture of Tata Power and the Government of Odisha, has further strengthened its drive against electricity theft, reaffirming its commitment to delivering reliable and quality power supply. Despite rolling out multiple consumer focused initiatives, power theft continues to pose a serious challenge. Through focused enforcement actions, TPNODL has successfully curbed nearly 500 MW of unauthorized power usage so far, underscoring its zero-tolerance approach towards electricity theft.

The impact of these enforcement efforts is reflected in recent figures, with 132 MW of electricity theft prevented during 2025 alone. Among all regions, the Balasore Electrical Circle led the drive by preventing 54.40 MW, with 9,418 cases registered. Other circles also recorded notable outcomes, including 20 MW in Baripada, 24 MW in Bhadrak, 21 MW in Jajpur and 13 MW in Keonjhar. Overall, more than 29,000 cases have been booked against offenders across these areas. The utility has demonstrated steady progress over the years by preventing 73.23 MW in FY 2021-22, 101.12 MW in FY 2022-23 and a combined nearly 200 MW during FY 2023-24 and 2024-25.

To tackle the issue more effectively, TPNODL has put in place a strong monitoring mechanism spanning from Section Offices up to Electrical Circle Offices. Dedicated central enforcement teams, including women officers, are carrying out intensive inspections with active assistance from the District Administration and Police. The company continues to act firmly against offenders to safeguard the reliability and safety of the power distribution system. Consumers are reminded that electricity theft is a punishable offence and are encouraged to regularize their connected load in line with actual household requirements.

TPNODL also highlights that electricity theft does not only lead to revenue loss but adversely affects honest consumers by resulting in frequent outages, voltage fluctuations and higher tariff pressures. Promoting public participation, the company has urged citizens to report power theft in their neighborhoods by calling 94389-06002. With the onset of the summer season, these preventive initiatives are being increasingly acknowledged by the public and intellectuals as vital measures to ensure uninterrupted and dependable power supply across Northern Odisha.
