Jharsuguda, March 31st, 2026: As Odisha prepares to celebrate its 90th foundation day, the Vedanta Kalinga Lancers’ Hockey India League title earlier this year brings renewed focus to the state’s deep-rooted hockey culture and its continued contribution to the national game. The Lancers emerged champions of the second season of the Hockey India League in January 2026, with a campaign that reflected the strength of a state’s system that consistently produces talent.
At the heart of this success was a strong Odia core, including players such as Pratap Lakra, Dipsan Tirkey, Rohit Kullu, Rosan Kujur, and Amit K. Toppo. These players honed their skills on local grounds before stepping onto the national stage. This depth is backed by sustained investment in grassroots development across districts like Sundargarh and Rourkela, where hockey remains a part of everyday life. Over the years, this structure has ensured a steady pipeline of players progressing into professional leagues and the national setup, further strengthened through collaboration with the Government of Odisha to support and grow the sport.
“Odisha’s relationship with hockey goes far beyond the field, it is part of the state’s identity and community. The success of the Vedanta Kalinga Lancers this season reflects the strength of that bond and the talent that continues to emerge from the region. As we celebrate Odisha Diwas, it is important for us to recognise and share this achievement with the people who have been at the heart of this journey,” said Rajiv Kumar, CEO, Vedanta Aluminium.
“It is always a matter of great pride to see young talent from Odisha stepping up and delivering on a stage like the Hockey India League, and the success of the Vedanta Kalinga Lancers this season reflects that strength. Hockey shares a deep and enduring connection with Odisha, and it is encouraging to see that legacy continue through both the team and the players coming through. On the occasion of Odisha Diwas, I extend my warm wishes to the people of the state.” said, Dilip Tirkey, President, Hockey India
The strong Odia presence within the Lancers is visible not just on the field, but off it as well, with Video Analyst Abhijeet Hazary, Physiotherapist Bodhisattva Dass and Masseur Sunil Kumar Mohanty playing key roles in the team’s setup. The team has also reflected Odisha’s cultural identity through its award-winning jersey, which draws inspiration from the Konark Sun Temple wheel and the flow of the state’s rivers, showcasing these elements on a national platform.
The season’s success and the state’s enduring hockey legacy were also marked through a community celebration held at the Vedanta Jharsuguda township, bringing together employees and local stakeholders as part of Odisha Day.
