Building on its ESG vision of “Transforming for Good,” Vedanta Aluminium is embedding sustainability into every aspect of its operations from decarbonizing smelters and refining processes to empowering communities and restoring ecosystems. The report details how the company’s philosophy, Responsible Today, Sustainable Always, is driving a paradigm shift across India’s aluminium value chain. With world-class facilities in Odisha and Chhattisgarh, Vedanta Aluminium produced 2.42 million tonnes of aluminium in FY25 over half of India’s total output while maintaining zero tolerance for environmental non-compliance. The company also became ASI Chain of Custody (CoC) certified, strengthening its credentials as a global supplier of responsibly produced aluminium.
Rajiv Kumar, CEO, Vedanta Aluminium, said“At Vedanta Aluminium, sustainability is not just a compliance measure, it is our strategic compass for growth. Our ESG progress reflects how a hard-to-abate sector like aluminium can embrace transformation through innovation, renewable energy, and circularity. We are proud to lead India’s journey toward Net Zero, proving that industrial progress and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand.”
Redefining Heavy Industry for a Greener Future
At the heart of Vedanta Aluminium’s sustainability vision lies a deep commitment to decarbonization. The company achieved an 8.96% reduction in carbon intensity, reaching 17.01 tCO₂e per tonne of aluminium, its lowest yet since FY21. To further this momentum, Vedanta plans to procure around 1,500 MW of renewable energy by 2030 through long-term Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs), aligning its operations with India’s Net Zero ambitions and the rising global demand for low-carbon aluminium.
A major stride in this direction is the company’s partnership with GAIL Gas Limited to supply natural gas to its Jharsuguda smelter. The transition, expected by end-2025, will reduce over 47,000 tonnes of CO₂ annually, marking a significant shift toward cleaner energy. GAIL is constructing a 7.5 km pipeline to deliver 32,000 SCM/day of natural gas under a five-year agreement supporting Vedanta’s upcoming 430 KTPA cast house and furthering its decarbonization roadmap.
Circular Economy at Scale
Beyond energy transition, Vedanta Aluminium is setting new benchmarks in resource efficiency. The company achieved over 100% fly ash utilization, repurposing 12.08 million metric tonnes(MT) for infrastructure and manufacturing applications from cement co-processing and brick-making to mine reclamation and road construction.
In FY 2024–25 alone, the company recycled and reused 14.6 million MT of waste, embodying a circular economy approach that minimizes landfill use while generating community and industrial value. This commitment extends to water conservation, biodiversity protection, and the proactive restoration of mined areas, reflecting a holistic sustainability vision.
Transforming the Planet through Measurable Impact
Vedanta Aluminium’s sustainability performance in FY25 reflects its holistic approach to environmental stewardship. The company recorded 1,570 million units (MU) of renewable energy consumption and 378 MU in energy savings across locations, highlighting the growing share of green energy in its power mix. It also recycled 16.79 million cubic metres of water, maintaining Zero Liquid Discharge across all facilities.
Innovation and Climate Resilience at the Core
Vedanta Aluminium’s sustainability story is powered by innovation. Partnering with over 70 startups, the company has deployed 100+ technology-led projects integrating robotics, artificial intelligence, and smart safety systems to enhance operational efficiency and workplace safety. The company is also embedding climate resilience across operations from climate-risk assessments in infrastructure design to community adaptation initiatives that safeguard local ecosystems.
Low-Carbon Aluminium for a Sustainable Tomorrow
Through its flagship product range,Restora (low-carbon aluminium) and Restora Ultra (ultra-low carbon aluminium), Vedanta Aluminium is charting a responsible path for the industry. Restora products record a GHG intensity below 4 tCO₂e per MT, nearly half the global threshold for low-carbon aluminium, with a goal for 30% of its portfolio to comprise these products by 2030.
With clear ESG goals, measurable performance, and transparent reporting, the company continues to set new standards for responsible manufacturing. By aligning its business strategy with national priorities like Make in India and Net Zero 2070, Vedanta Aluminium is not only powering the nation’s green energy transition but also shaping the global narrative on sustainable aluminium.
