Vedanta Jharsuguda Organizes 20th Odisha Sqay Martial Arts Championship

Jharsuguda,swa news : Vedanta Aluminium,India’s largest producer of aluminium, hosted the 20thOdisha State Sqay Martial Arts Championship attheVedanta Martial Arts Training Centerin Jharsuguda. Held in collaboration with the SqayAssociation of Odisha,the championship saw enthusiastic participation by 190 young athletes from across the state, representing districts such as Jharsuguda, Cuttack, Nawarangpur, Khordha, Sambalpur, Sundargarh, Ganjam, Rayagada, Angul and Puri. The event was an opportunity to celebrate the spirit of sportsmanshipand promote a shared passion for traditional martial arts among local youths.

Sqay is a traditional martial art that originated in the Jammu &Kashmir region, known for blending unique sword-and-shield combat techniques. It merges ancient practices with modern sporting rules and now includes both armed and unarmed forms. Recognized as a sport in India and aligned with standardized rulesset by the International Council of Sqay Martial Arts, it has gained prominence in national competitions, promoting disciplined training as well as cultural heritage.

The event was attended by distinguished guests, including Prasad Tamang, Commandant, OSAP 2nd Battalion Jharsuguda and Jyoti Sahu, Additional Tehsildar, Jharsuguda. Vedanta employees also volunteered at the event, actively cheering the young contenders. Many young participants, some competing for the first time, demonstrated exceptional promise through their reflexesand confidence.

Sharing his appreciation for the initiative, Commandant Prasad Tamang, OSAP 2ndBattalion – Jharsuguda, added, “This championship reflects the growing sporting spirit of our youth. Sqay is not just a martial art but a discipline that builds character, agilityand mental resilience. I commend Vedanta Jharsuguda and the Sqay Association of Odisha for taking the initiative to foster such positive avenues of growth and empowering young athletes.”

The Vedanta Martial Arts Training Center, established as part of Vedanta Aluminium’s community development initiatives, has been actively coaching children and youth in and around Jharsuguda. The center provides structured training, exposure to competitive platforms, and mentorship that helps young individuals channel their energy into positive pursuits. Many trainees have gone on to represent the district and state, making the center not just a training hub but a grassroots talent development ecosystem.By promoting traditional martial arts, Vedanta continues to champion initiatives that encourage fitness, confidence and leadership skills among the youth of Odisha.
