Bhubaneswar:swa news : In a major achievement for the Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS), doctors have successfully performed a rare allogenic bone marrow transplant on a 17-year-old female patient diagnosed with Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis (HLH), a rare genetic blood disorder. She had been undergoing cancer chemotherapy for six months before being considered for a bone marrow transplant.
The procedure was an allogenic bone marrow transplant, where healthy bone marrow from a donor is infused into a patient. In this case, the donor was the patient’s brother. The transplant was challenging due to the rarity of the disorder and the complex preparation involved, but it was carried out successfully by the expert team at KIMS.
This is one of the rare cases where an allogenic bone marrow transplant has been performed for HLH in Odisha, marking a significant medical milestone for the state.
This success offers new hope for patients in Odisha who previously had to travel to other states for such advanced treatment. The procedure at KIMS was done at a much lower cost, making it more accessible for many families. The transplant was done at a significantly lower cost compared to private hospitals outside the state. Additionally, the procedure was covered under the Ayushman Bharat Yojana, helping reduce the financial burden on the patient’s family.
Dr. Biswajit Bhuyan from the Department of Haematology and Dr. Palash Das from the Department of Paediatric Haematology at KIMS led the transplant. Their dedication and expertise were key to the success of this complex case.
The Department of Haematology at KIMS has been consistently treating critical cases of blood cancers and other blood disorders. It is well-equipped with state-of-the-art facilities and offers advanced care at an affordable cost, enabling patients from Odisha and neighbouring regions to receive world-class treatment close to home.
The Founder of KIIT and KISS Dr Achyuta Samanta has hailed the big achievement and has lauded the doctors and wished the patient a long and healthy life.
