With unprecedented summer temperatures being experienced across the country, electricity demand has risen sharply nationwide, placing significant pressure on power systems across India. Peak power demand at the national level has touched 270 GW compared to 243GW last year, reflecting the scale of consumption during the ongoing extreme heat conditions.
Odisha has similarly witnessed a substantial increase in electricity demand driven by prolonged heatwave conditions, increasing air-conditioning load, industrial growth, and wider electrification. The peak demand season has also arrived earlier this year, commencing in May instead of the usual June period due to sustained high temperatures and elevated cooling demand from early April itself.
Bhubaneswar alone recorded an all-time peak demand of around 750 MW on 19 May, compared to the previous peak of around 641 MW last year; reflecting an increase of 17%.
Similarly, Cuttack recorded its highest-ever peak demand of 241 MW, while Puri touched a record demand of 75 MW, highlighting the growing urban load and increasing pressure on the distribution network during the current heatwave period.
Despite these challenging conditions, our teams are working round the clock to maintain network stability and minimise disruptions. Maintenance staff, operations teams, network personnel, call centre teams, PSCC teams, and backend support staff are functioning 24×7 to monitor the system, respond to faults, and proactively undertake preventive and corrective measures.
Our staff across field locations have also been fully equipped with necessary safety gear, hydration support, and ORS to ensure their safety and well-being while working continuously in extreme weather and high-load operating conditions.
As temperatures continue to remain high, our field and technical teams are working in close coordination to strengthen infrastructure resilience, attend to complaints at the earliest, and ensure continuity of supply to consumers.
We would also like to emphasise that employee safety and customer safety remain paramount, especially during extreme weather conditions and high-load operations. Every effort is being made to balance rapid response with safe operating practices.
We remain committed to doing our utmost to ensure uninterrupted and reliable power supply and seek the cooperation and understanding of consumers during this period of exceptionally high demand and extreme heat conditions.
