Kalbaishakhi Storm Severely Damages Power Network in Sundergarh and Bargarh; TPWODL Launches Massive Restoration Drive

Sambalpur, 25 May 2026: A severe Kalbaishakhi storm lashed Sundergarh and Bargarh districts on Monday afternoon, causing extensive damage to the electricity distribution infrastructure in the licensed areas of TP Western Odisha Distribution Limited (TPWODL).

The high-speed winds and heavy storm led to major disruption in the 11kV and 33kV power distribution network in both districts. More than Hundreds of trees were uprooted and fell on electricity lines, damaging more than 130 electricity poles at multiple locations. More than 500 circuit kilometres (CKM) of 11kV and 33kV feeder lines were severely affected, while nearly 1,000 distribution transformers (DTRs) were affected due to the impact of the storm in both districts.

The damage resulted in widespread power outages in several parts of Rourkela Town and many areas across Sundergarh and Bargarh districts. More than 1.17Lakhs electricity consumers from Rourkela Town and Sundergarh district and over 50,000 electricity consumers from Bargarh district were affected because of the disruption in power supply.

Immediately after the storm, TPWODL activated its Disaster Response Protocol and mobilized restoration teams in the affected areas. TPWODL linemen, officers, and Business Associate (BA) teams have been deployed on a war footing manner to restore electricity supply at the earliest possible time.

Special priority is being given to restoring power supply to critical infrastructure and emergency service locations. TPWODL has also set up 24×7 control rooms for continuous monitoring and effective deployment of manpower and resources.

Despite the extensive damage caused by the storm, TPWODL is making all-out efforts for speedy restoration, and power supply in most affected areas is expected to be restored in a phased manner by midnight.

TPWODL expressed sincere gratitude to the people of Sundergarh and Bargarh districts for their patience and cooperation during the restoration process. The company reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring safe and quick restoration of electricity supply even during severe weather conditions.
